The end of the year is well and truly in sight and, while it’s exciting, it’s also a time that is synonymous with burnout and exhaustion.
With deadlines to meet, extra commitments and less time to practise self-care, it can be easy to slip into unhealthy patterns or behaviours that aren’t in our best interest.
So what can you do to help yourself get through the silly season with some pep in your step?
Being mindful and aware helps us to focus on the present moment at hand and to experience the moment to its full capacity. As humans, it’s natural to spend a lot of time on ‘autopilot’, living mechanically, but it’s important that we catch ourselves and become more conscious of what we’re doing and when we’re doing it.
When we’re able to be more mindful, we’re able to understand what works for us and what doesn’t.
Don’t put yourself under too much pressure, just do what you can and give yourself permission to say ‘no’. You don’t have to make it to every single Christmas-do that you’re invited to.
Everything is more manageable when you have a plan. Break your goals down into small steps, plan your meals so that you know you’re going to have something delicious and nutritious to fuel your body, plan your day so that you can fit in what you need to get done.
Whether it’s spending 20 minutes at your favourite beach, cuddling your furry friend or popping on that face mask. Do something every day that makes you feel happy. It doesn’t have to be anything big, just a little something to show yourself some gratitude for all the hard work and effort you put into all the aspects of your life.
For 30 minutes, everyday, do something that gets your heart rate up, your blood pumping and those endorphins flowing. Try mixing things up to give yourself some variety. Go for a walk around your neighbourhood, join an online dance class, check out your local yoga studio or sign up to play a team sport at your community centre. Whatever you’re keen for, get out there and get moving. Your body will thank you for it and you’ll feel so much better within yourself, plus it's a great way to release a bit of stress!
The breath is a very powerful tool, one that can be especially useful when you’re feeling overwhelmed. The best part is it’s free and it’s accessible to anyone, everywhere! Some people like to call this practice meditation, but I like to think of it as just tuning into breath. Spend 5-10 minutes everyday, just focussing on your breath. Put on some relaxation music if that helps you get into the ‘zone’. If you’re someone who struggles to just sit and breathe, try a guided meditation, there are plenty on YouTube or check out one of my favourite apps - Insight Timer.
Now’s a great time to start cultivating healthy habits as we head into a fresh new year. I highly recommend having a read of Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg. This is a great book that will help you create a happier, healthier life in a way that is easy and fun!
And remember, if you ever need someone to have a chat to, I’m just a message away!
