Parents, start building a relationship with your children when they are young. Don’t wait until they are teenagers!

The Monster in Every Room?
“Based on statistics, Singapore has the highest average screen time – with children spending over 35 hours per week on entertainment. With higher screentime and easy internet access, exposure to pornography will naturally increase too!” said Benedict Lim, at the “Monster in Every Room” talk held online on 14 September 2023.
Gone are the days when you could deter this from happening by keeping the computer in a public space at home. Instead, the computer is now in your hand – the mobile phone.

The Greatest Gift A Father Can Give
What is the greatest gift a father can give to his child? Is it something tangible like a puppy? Or perhaps something fleeting, like time? Over 35 fathers including two spiritual fathers-to-be, were posed this question by Clement Ong at the Immaculate Heart of Mary last Saturday (10 June 2023). . .

Achieving Digital Wellness – The Triple P® Way
According to a 2021 newspaper article in Straits Times, two-thirds of children aged seven to nine in Singapore use smartphones every day and are active on social media. More than 40 per cent of them have their own Facebook accounts, while a quarter are on Instagram. About a third of parents in the survey commissioned by The Straits Times say they do not know who their children interact with on social media. . .
Digital wellness is all about keeping a balance between one’s life online and offline. As their children were attending catechism classes on a Saturday afternoon, parents attended the workshop, Positive Parenting Programme (Triple P).

What Does A Child Truly Want From Their Father?
“Children want your time. They spell love as T-I-M-E,” shared Clement Ong to a group of nearly 20 fathers at St Joseph’s Church, Bukit Timah for the talk, ‘A Father’s Mission’. Clement, who is a certified coach, therapist, and father of two, explained that many fathers (himself included) fall victim to rationalising that the time spent away from their children, would be made up through quality time. “You cannot truly have quality time without the quantity time,” he said. . .
To me, it’s communication. I have one idea on how to do things, and my wife has another.

Is Your Relationship/ Marriage Flourishing?
Many of us want our relationship with our significant other to be positive and flourishing. This however, is not an entitlement. It is an intentional choice that requires continuous work.
The content was refreshing and some of it provided us a new perspective of looking at our relationship, especially the interesting tips on conflict regulation and what may be perpetual problems. This is so true when we tend to believe that everything can be fixed. The talk helped opened doors for loving and open conversations. We look forward to attending an extended talk on this topic!

Are you really listening to your child/teen?
We all listen, albeit selectively at times.
Listening is an important skill that helps you connect with your child/teen, especially when they are stressed or anxious. Deep listening to our children/teens requires parents to set aside time to listen and be mindful of the child/teenager, being at the same eye level as the child/teen, listening without interrupting, acknowledging his/her feelings and encouraging him to share openly without judgement or criticism.
One of the things that parents can do to help children or teens who are stressed and anxious is to listen deeply without interrupting, judging, criticizing or even offering solution.

Does Your Child Belong to You or to God?
That was the question asked by Andrew Soong, a behavioural analyst, to nearly 20 parents gathered at Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary last month. There was a noticeable shift in the room, as a flurry of answers came from all directions.
“My children belong to me!” exclaimed one parent.
I think 50 - 50. 50% belongs to me, the other 50% belongs to God,

Valuable Takeaways from Raising
Emotionally Resilient Children
As parents, we all want our children to be happy, healthy, and resilient. But amidst the rising statistics of mental health issues in youth, what can we as parents do about it?
In a bid to answer this, Catholic Family Life (CFL) recently organised an online talk titled “Raising Emotionally Resilient Children”. The talk conducted by Dr Tan E-Ching, a physician of 20 years and a mother of three, shared expert tips to the more than 70 parent attendees. The tips centred on the need for parents to play the pivotal role in influencing the emotional development of children in their day-to-day lives. . .
Wow! Looks like we parents have to learn to practise this ourselves, (before) practising this on the kids.
