“When you first start a drawing there’s always that ugly stage. But you go along lost in the pencil/pen and push past it. Back and forth, shaping, molding your subject like a sculptor. If you don’t give up you can reveal the soul…”

Drawing Inspiration & Thoughts

Why do we feel the need to create? I know why I create. I need to vocalize the desires of my soul. I need to open the gates deep down inside before the flood comes and suffocates me. It’s a release of a sort, that lets me take flight far away from situations or negativities, and lets me play in the world of imagination where I am free to be if only for a few hours. The calm that soothes my soul and leaves behind remnants of me.

Where do I put all of this information that my eyes keep feeding me? Colors, lines, textures, stories, music, rhythm, flow, my senses are overwhelmed, searching where and how to release it all. That’s when I look up to the sky, and wait for direction, wait for the idea to fly by so I can grab it quickly and let it drive me through my creation.

Sometimes when I want to escape my anxieties, my fears, I draw, and leave earth until my art piece is complete. Then I come back feeling renewed. If inspiration hasn’t hit, I sit quietly and patiently wait and inevitably it comes to visit me.

Doing this gives the inspiration the opening it needs to actually speak. So many times throughout our days we are busy busy busy, always working or thinking or interacting on some level; drowning out our quiet with noise and activity. Noise from television, radio, games, phones, conversations. We fill even our free time with social media, with internet, text messages; our brains rarely have that second to sit and think and have those ‘aha’ moments.

Now that isn’t to say the things we fill our time with can’t be inspiring, or worthwhile, just simply ‘being still’ has become increasingly more difficult to achieve. If you let yourself free to sketch and push past the beginning stages of drawings or doodles, you could come up with something amazing without even planning to. And even if you end up hating it, at least you get practice you need and a little time to zone out from the “every day.” That alone is worth so very much.

We’re all going through something, how you rise up to your challenges is what makes you….YOU. Sometimes you fight, sometimes you seek rest and reflection, as for me, I encourage you to let it out artistically. Giving your feelings an outlet is very freeing and at times helps you to let go and relax when nothing else seems to. Just remember, you’re not alone. History is full of artists and both their struggles and joys, left behind in their thousands of sketches, paintings, songs, and creations.

What do you do with yourself when things seem to become overwhelming? How does art help you through challenges in your life?
