"you're successful precisely because you are focused, but by definition, the sharper the focus, the wider the blind spots"
- Paul Barry
"Forget about promising to give people things they think they want. Help them plug the holes in their bucket and claim the things they're already leaving on the table ."
- Travis Stephenson (three-time 2 Comma Club award winner)
It's highly likely that you have everything you need. Except clarity. Then, sometimes with clear eyes, we still don't have the distance to be able to truly see the potential in the whole picture.
We can easily have a long history of bias and too much invested in it to see it the way it actually is. As client of mine recently said, "It's like I was standing so close that all I could see was grey. YOU saw the whole elephant!".
I have been inspired my entire life by visionaries. The people that don't fit in, so instead, they stand out. The people that immerse themselves so fully that their interests spill over into every other area that would seem, at first, to be irrelevant to their field.
Those who zig when others zag;. Those who jump as others duck.
That's where I live. That's where I thrive.
The space in between the known quantities.
That magical space of possibility.
I have always told my clients to seek what could be, what might be, instead of what should be or will be.
I have encouraged them to see that the answer to, 'Is it possible...?' is always 'YES', and that the failure of a similar course of action in the past is just as likely to be poor execution as it is to be that it simply won't work.
A stage director years ago asked us, the cast, to move a 10-foot long heavy metal bench into the wings which were 3-feet deep. After half an hour of complaining that the task was impossible.... we did it.
Why was this seemingly impossible task somehow all of a sudden possible?
Because he told us, 'If it were possible, how would you do it?' So we just assumed there was a solution and explored all the possible ways to get there.
Maybe we'll chat sometime and I can tell you how we got it to fit there in that previously "impossible" space....
