CONFLICT
10 CONFLICT RESOLUTION SKILLS
May 24, 2022
Managing conflict is so much easier when we’ve built a set of supporting skills through practice. It’s especially helpful to work on these skills when we’re not embroiled in a situation where emotions may be heightened. Then pull out these tools and use them to your advantage when the time comes.
DIPLOMACY. Learn to express yourself in delicate situations. It is critical for you and another person to understand each other’s perspectives in order to come to a resolution. Choose your words carefully.
COMPROMISE. Know how to work toward the middle ground. Develop a shared outcome and be willing to give and take to get to resolution.
PATIENCE. take time to think through the facts of the conflict, how you want to show up, and what you want to achieve. Don’t forget that you can also choose your battles. Know whether this situation is worth the effort; sometimes letting go is the better solution.
OBJECTIVITY. Aim to see the situation from multiple perspectives. Reflect on others’ positions. And create a desired outcome that serves the greater good.
HUMILITY. Recognize that you can make mistakes. And you can learn, grow, and develop from these circumstances.
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE. Know your own reactions and impulses. This awareness allows you to see the landmines in situations and conversations and to try to avoid them.
LACK OF JUDGEMENT. Keep your eye on the facts of the conflict and the desired outcome, rather than letting your thoughts about the person erode.
ACCOUNTABILITY. Own your part in the conflict, past or present.
EMPATHY. Recognize that you don’t know everyone’s history, current state or emotions. Allow space for others to share where they’re coming from. You don’t have to agree or identify, just hold the space for sharing.
COMPASSION. Remember that we’re all human, we all make mistakes, and most of the time we act in a way that moves us towards some perceived benefit. Rise above the conflict and put the relationship first.
STRENGTHEN YOUR SKILLS FOR SUCCESSFULLY RESOLVING CONFLICT.
