OTHER PEOPLE'S OPINIONS
July 6, 2022
This one is a loaded topic! One of my favorites and a great source of growth for many of us:
OTHER PEOPLE’S OPINIONS ABOUT YOU ARE NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.
Many of us would, I’m sure, consider ourselves strong, independent women. We would likely say that we are confident decision-makers and action-takers. And yet, it’s perfectly understandable to want to fit in and assimilate at home and at work. I would have put myself in that category too. Yet, I found myself listening to my coach talk about other people’s opinions and wondering – do I do this? As I explored I found a number of arenas where I was letting my thoughts about other people’s opinions have more weight than I wanted. I found places where I wanted to “swim in my own lane” - So then what?
Start to pay more attention to drive awareness
Challenge thoughts to determine what is fact and what is conjecture
Weigh the value of other people’s opinions
Stop for a minute and take note of all the places you might be letting other people’s opinions creep in:
*Your parenting decisions
*Your day-to-day work/life choices about how to spend your time
*What you say/don’t say in a meeting or boardroom
*How you interact with your colleagues
*Your remote work choices and availability
*The choices you make for your children or let them make for themselves
*Your decisions about your health and wellness
*Your career choices or decisions to stay home
*What you post/don’t post on social media
*How much attention you pay to comments, “likes” and followers
*How much you express your goals, feelings and needs
*How much time you spend replaying conversations
*How you choose to spend your free time
As you reflect, if you find yourself asking, “What will other people think?”, then this topic is one you might need to work on.
Like any of these meaty topics, this one isn’t black or white. There’s value in connecting and building relationships and having a circle of people. And knowing how you’re relating to others is important in building relationships. But be wary of bending too much to others’ influence. Choose wisely.
KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU STAND FOR.
