Are supermarkets to blame?
25 April 2022
A few years ago I got one of those vouchers that gives you £20 off an Ocado shop.
Nice one!
I hadn’t used Ocado before, so I hopped online, filled up my basket, and a few days later the van arrived.
I got chatting to the delivery driver, and he told me that he delivers for both Ocado and Morrisons, and claimed he could tell the difference between the 2 types of customer.
Not from the labels on the products but from the type of food they buy.
According to him, the Ocado orders are full of fruit and veg, whereas the Morrisons ones are mostly multipacks of crisps and frozen pizzas.
I was really surprised!
I had imagined that there would be a difference, but I’d expected it to be more about the price points than the health.
If I had to guess I would have said that Ocado shoppers may buy a bit more Stilton and Sancerre, and the Morrisons a bit more Cheddar and Chardonnay.
But clearly it goes further than that.
And it makes me wonder – is it the supermarkets themselves that influence the types of food we buy?
Are some supermarkets choosing to encourage their shoppers to buy processed foods with a higher profit margin?
Or is it that different supermarkets attract customers with different health-choices?
I don’t have the answers here.
But it might be worth an experiment – try a different supermarket for your weekly shop and see if your trolley is stacked in favour of different foods!
