I just returned from the Highland Echoes Scottish Music and Dance tour, so you are going to benefit here from my Scottish Highland Energy that is leftover from the tour. Over the next few weeks, I’m going to give you tons of information about Scotland and what you can do to promote cultural diversity and meet required standards in your classroom by using Scottish history and cultural content. Episode No. 31 Introducing Scottish Work Songs: Waulking
In Episode No. 31 I share all about a Scottish Highland Tradition of the Waulking. Waulking songs are Scottish folk songs, traditionally sung in the Gaelic language by women while fulling cloth. This practice involved a group of women rhythmically beating newly woven tweed against a table or similar surface to soften it. Simple, beat-driven songs were used to accompany the work.
There is great content in today’s episode to create lessons around PYP themes of inquiry as well as many standards for the arts, and social studies. I love the flexibility of these cultural diversity content ideas that bring an awareness of Scottish heritage that quite possibly exists in your area.
Episode No. 30 Robert Burns: The famous Scottish Poet
I want to share with you a little bit about the Famous Poet from Scotland by the name of Robert Burns who was affectionally knows as Rabbie Burns.
By introducing his famous song - Auld Lang Syne to you classroom you can follow up with a lesson to help students learn how to determine the theme of a poem and the narrator’s response to that theme, using details from the text itself. CCSS.ELA LITERACY RL 5.2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.
The poem is in Scots Dialect and its’ all about friendship. Students will need to do some research on some of the unfamiliar words before they are able to understand the meaning of the poem.
