It's loud out there... here's how to tune in
Ever feel like you’re in the middle of Times Square on New Year's Eve?
Not in the exciting, glitter-exploding kind of way, but more in the “Everyone is shouting and I can’t hear my own thoughts” kind of way?
That’s the world we’re in – so many voices, so much advice, and way too many people telling you how to live your life.
I struggled with this a lot when I started my business.
There are a million and one strategies to build a digital business and when I couldn't listen to myself, I ended up flip-flopping around.
I would start multiple things at the same time, and then never really go through with them because (as I realized later on) they didn't truly resonate with me.
Now, I see this a lot with my clients.
They find themselves scattered because there is so much advice, and they are caught in an endless "I should also do this..." pattern rather than an intentional, aligned pursuit.
But the thing is, somewhere amidst all that noise, there’s one unique sound.
Quiet, delicate, but unapologetically authentic.
That’s your voice. That's your power.
That's the most sustainable fuel and inspiration you have.
So, how on earth do you hear that sound?
1. Create Stillness
No, I’m not suggesting you move to a secluded cabin in the woods.
But, every once in a while, I find it helpful to mute the outside world.
There is so much information flying at you at all times, it is no wonder you find it difficult to tune in.
You'll want to create different levels of stillness in your life (daily, weekly, monthly).
Some examples: a phone-free Sunday, setting a boundary around using your phone first thing in the morning, going for a short walk without headphones, doing a breathing exercise, or a gentle meditation.
(Pssst... I speak about this stillness more in this podcast episode 👂🏼)
2. When in doubt, write
Putting pen to paper is one of the most effective ways to not only sort through your own thoughts, but also to gain perspective.
There is a difference between what you really believe and what's just front of mind that day.
Seriously, when in doubt, just write.
It doesn't matter how structured it is. It doesn't matter if you get distracted in between. It doesn't matter if you don't finish a few sentences. It's about the process of writing.
It's mind-boggling how much clarity this simple act can bring.
3. Your body is a tool
To me, some advice feels like a warm hug, and some advice feels like someone is trying to squeeze me into a too-tight dress.
When you consider an option, use your body to tune in:
Everyone can – and probably will – have an opinion about your life (and business).
But they don’t have to live it – you do.
At the end of the day, your voice is there.
It’s waiting for you to tune in, to listen, and to follow it.
Rooting for you,
Charlotte
