Laura Yawanawá is a Zapotec and Mixtec Indian from Oaxaca, Mexico, who
has dedicated her life’s work to protecting the rights of indigenous peoples from all over Latin America. She has co-founded organizations to support indigenous peoples, such as the Nawa Institute and the Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Alliance. She also worked for the Institute of Climate Change in Brazil and served as the Executive Director of the South and Meso-American Indian Rights Center in California.
After marrying the Chief of the Yawanawá people, she expanded her focus to cultivating a more open and inclusive indigenous community for women. She now serves as president-director of the Sociocultural Association Yawanawá.
