Becoming a Certified Baby & Child Sleep Consultant
and an Autism and Anxiety Specialist
_______
I’m Lindsey, mum of two gorgeous, crazy, little ones, certified child and baby sleep consultant and qualified primary school teacher.
My Background
I’ve been working with little ones and families for almost 20 years. From volunteering at nurseries, becoming a class teacher to even working as deputy head at a large infant school, I have always had a passion for helping children learn. Coming from a background in Education has allowed me to access extensive training covering areas such as Child Psychology, Attachment Theory, Infant Mental health, Safeguarding, Behaviour Management and Special Educational Needs.
My Story
After my children were born I experienced severe sleep deprivation first hand. I knew a newborn was likely to mean broken sleep but honestly, I got the shock of my life. My firstborn had issues with reflux and allergies and would not be put down day or night. She was super alert and we never really ever had that ‘drowsy’ stage people talk about. The only way I could get her to sleep was to feed her, which I did… constantly. The nights were horrendous because she would wake every 45-90 minutes. I became so anxious about getting any sleep myself that even when she was asleep I still couldn’t nod off. I was averaging 3-4 hours of broken sleep per night and there were a few nights where I had no sleep at all! I think it’s safe to say I was in a bad way. I was constantly tearful, exhausted and worried that my precious baby wasn’t getting the sleep she needed.
I needed help but I was reluctant because I was worried that there would be lots of crying involved or that it would damage the bond between my baby and I. I was embarrassed because I felt like I'd done something wrong and didn't want to admit that I was struggling. The cost also worried me as I thought it might not work for us – that my baby couldn’t be helped and I'd be wasting my money. I couldn't have been more wrong...
After another night of NO sleep I contacted a consultant and honestly it was the best thing I ever did. We were able to get into a fantastic routine and instilled habits that are still going strong even now. My little one started sleeping in much longer chunks and then through the night (7am-7pm). It was amazing and the bond between my daughter and I remains stronger than ever.
When my second child was born I thought I had things sorted. I didn’t anticipate that he might actually be a more challenging sleeper! He had reflux, allergies and other health issues which meant he would only sleep upright in a sling – and he spent the first three months of his life in one! I also didn’t even consider that fact that he was a different baby, with a completely different temperament and the techniques I used with my first child may not suit him.
I quickly realised a bespoke plan was definitely needed and contacted a consultant again. My second child took a little longer to adjust to the new routine but after a consistent approach we got there and he is now a fantastic sleeper.
Autism, Anxiety and Additional Needs
Many of the autistic children I worked with during my teaching career had struggled with sleep, which meant I witnessed first-hand what a detrimental effect poor sleep had on their academic progress and mental health. It always saddened me that there didn't seem any professional support available for these families.
After working as a sleep consultant for several years and having huge success, I found myself having to turn away families of children who had specific or additional needs. It's a fact that traditional sleep training methods are often not effective when working with children with more complex needs, so I decided to train as a certified autism and anxiety sleep specialist. I now have the knowledge to support these families so that they too can get amazing sleep.
My Mission
My experiences with my own children led me to where I am today. I don't ever want another parent to feel the way I did when I was sleep deprived, so it’s now my mission to help others who are struggling, get the sleep they deserve. I know all too well the devastating effects that sleep deprivation has on day-to-day life. Every parent should be able to enjoy the precious moments when their children are small without feeling exhausted and drained. I want to be able to offer my skills and knowledge to help parents in need so that they never have to experience sleep deprivation again… and their children get to have the best sleep possible in order to grow and develop to their full potential too.
If you are struggling with sleep, it’s not your fault. It doesn’t have to be this way.
I would love to be able to help you so please do take the first steps to a peaceful night’s sleep and book a FREE chat with me.
