Camp Day 2

Tuesday July 24, 2018

Day two of Camp started early this morning, with a quick potty break then straight into morning chores.

Crates have to be cleaned, bowls needed to be washed, and treat pouches filled. Once everyone was settled, it was time to start our first lesson on how to hold the leash properly. Campers were then taught many different variations on ways to lengthen and shorten the leash. This discussion led to an outdoor running exercise, where two campers ran side-by-side with their dogs, while maintaining loose leash control.

After that, we jumped right into our first training session. The Campers started with name recognition, saying the dogs name then “good”, and kibbling to reinforce the behavior. This was followed up with beginning to open the crate door without the dogs barging out. This process can take some time -- not every dog and handler can work at the same pace.

Next, it was time for lunch and the infamous Teena Talk. Campers learned how to massage their dogs and how important it can be when building a relationship with them.

The Campers then reinforced the crate exercise from the morning by practicing again. At the end of the day, we were all able to achieve leaving the crate door open for five seconds.

Before the day was over, we decided to test the waters with swimming. This can be really stressful, but it is necessary. Each dog was put into the pool while their handler called them from the ramp. Finally, we finished our day with chores and nap time.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's adventures...
