Now normally, I always tell my clients to NOT do deadlifts for more than 5 reps, because after 5 reps something will get tired and your form inevitably changes, making it much more likely that you hurt yourself.

 

But of course, I didn’t want to be the wimp to say ‘I don't want to do more than 5 reps!’...

 

So, 6-8 it was.

 

We warmed up, and got going.

 

I Worked up to 140kg which I got 7 reps with (tough, but I did it, and all was good).

 

“Let’s do another set”

 

Another set it was:

 

1,2,3,4… all good. 5, still ok but hard…

 

The sixth, a real struggle…

 

“Come on, one more!”

So I did...

That 7th Rep Was a Real Grinder, My Back Probably Rounded Like a Question Mark…

NOT pretty but I got it! 

 

We did a few more exercises afterwards and that was it, a great first workout together.

 

That was in the morning…

 

The rest of the day I had clients, and the whole day my back was feeling a bit tight and tired.

It was, no kidding, the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life.

 

I broke my collar bone when I was 17, but this was way worse!

 

I remember I somehow managed to get up with my wife’s help, and I stumbled towards the bed, leaning on her shoulders, and my little 3 year old daughter Lychia running around trying to make sense of it all...

 

When I was sitting on the edge of the bed, I was again stuck:

 

Trying to go sideways to lie down, I’d get crazy spasms from my tailbone to my upper back.

 

Trying to stand up, the same thing would happen:

 

Unbearable sharp & shooting pains up the entire spine…

 

Now a few days earlier,

So, while fighting against the extreme pain, I eventually managed to get downstairs, grab a rubber band (I was lucky to live above my gym at the time) and do this traction exercise...

Of course, being a man, I then thought “I’m all good again, it wasn't as bad as I thought!”

 

Perhaps you can guess the kind of thing that happened next:

 

My daughter Lychia (3 years old at the time) asked me to carry her back up the stairs, which I did...

 

and the pain came back just the way it was!

 

Turns out, while the decompression exercise was a great first step, and relieved a lot of the pressure on my back, it alone was NOT enough to fix my back completely.

 

During the next few weeks, I did what most people with back pain do and simply 'waited until it would go away' (despite me knowing that this is NOT the way to fix an injury)

 I’d still train, because after warming up a lot, I could (and this ego thing played up again)...

 

But as soon as I cooled down I'd be miserable from the pain again.

 

After a month or so, one of my female clients’ motherly instinct took over when she saw me struggling to pick up a 3-kilo dumbbell (you know, staying super upright to avoid any pressure on my fragile back)

My client said “Thomas, your back is still hurting, you

have to go to a doctor!”

Now of course I thought, ‘what is a doctor going to tell me what I don’t already know?’

 

But it did also flip a switch in my head that ‘damn she’s right, this has been going on for too long’.

 

So that night, I started to actually do the exercises that I’d always prescribe to clients with back pain and…

...The next morning was the first morning in weeks that my back wasn't super stiff and painful!

It still took a while to truly get back to where I was (mainly because back then I didn't know everything I do now), but since then, I’ve become stronger than ever, deadlifting 200kg, snatching 95kg and squatting 162.5, more than twice my bodyweight, without a lifting belt…

I had an L4-L5 disc surgery about a year and a half ago and then I had L5 nerve that was quite pinched that had really been hurting me for at least a year and a half.
