Dealing with the Challenges

of Becoming an Artist

JUNE 29/ by The Wanderlust Collective /Art, Inspiration, Lifestyle

It takes a lifetime to develop your art, it’ll change based on influences and experiences. The road to becoming an artist is full of obstacles, challenges, blood, sweat and tears. At first there will be some tears and not much appreciation, people can be mean and critical towards your work. It’s important to grow a very thick skin.

There’s no wrong or right in art. When I was first starting out I thought there was a “right” way to approach my art, I felt like all artists were on the right track except for me.

If I could go back in time, I would tell myself there is no right or wrong way. Just consistency and developing. It’s all about doing things your way. Had I known this earlier I would’ve been less stressed about how my work was received and more confident in my vision for my art.

Being in the business of art is very competitive. If you let it be. You get wrapped up in whose work is greater, who's selling more, and who's winning the awards.

The art world can be very competitive:  whose work is better, whose work is selling more. It took me a while to find my way and detach myself from the noise that was negatively influencing my decisions. And for some it might be one of the most difficult things you do on your path.

An Artist Is A Business Owner

Artists have more possibilities today than ever before. With the internet and social media at our disposal, you can be your own boss and sell your work. You can join art groups and be inspired alongside like-minded artists. There are more mediums, genres, and talent out there pushing and challenging us all.

Besides sharpening our skills as artists it’s important to know the business side. Learning how to market yourself, having a website, and social media presence is a necessity, and an ability to sell artwork directly is possible through these means.

Put yourself out there, educate yourself, don’t ever stop learning. Constant learning and growing is the foundation for great art. Get out there! Everyone needs a tribe for support.
