Winston Churchill Creating Art

History

Sir Winston Churchill was an English politician. He was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom twice, once during World War II. Churchill was born on November 1874 in Oxfordshire, England. Some people thought that Britain could not win the war, and that the British government should make peace with Hitler. Churchill was positive that Britain could win and led them to victory in the Second World War.

I was so blessed to get to visit The War Rooms in London. There I was so inspired by Churchill accomplishments and stories, that when I got home I worked on a full course on charcoals with the story of World War II. This piece focuses more on the famous quote from the movie, Darkest Hour; when Churchill goes on to explain in a meeting that you could not reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth. He was speaking of Hitler of course! I take you thru the development of Churchill’s face using charcoals and white pastels for highlights.

“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.”

Winston Churchill

This drawing was based on the quote I mentioned above, about not being able to reason with a tiger. Churchill is the Bulldog, and Hitler was the tiger. This was my interpretation of each figure.

Fun Fact- Winston Churchill became an artist when he was 40 years old. He is quoted as saying “Painting came to my rescue in a most trying time.” This hobby became a source of meditation so to speak a release of stress from his career. He would go on to create over 550 paintings, giving credit to practice, powers of observation and memory. His approach was simple, he said, “Go outside and paint what you see.” It is never too late to be an artist!

"Where Do We Go From Here?"
