1899: Starts with an Idea
In 1899 James Marshall knew he had a great idea. He just wanted to sleep on it a while. His invention, the pocket coil spring, set the future course for the mattress industry in North America and around the world.

Patented by James Marshall in 1900; first in Canada then followed by the United States and United Kingdom in 1901. The Marshall coil became the worldwide standard for mattress construction and upholstery seating.

1946: A Growing Group
Marshall Mattress produced its mattresses at its factories spanning the globe. With operations across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and for a period of time, Japan. The company grew its position as the defining luxury mattress brand of the 20th century. This was bolstered by its authority as the inventor of the pocket coil spring mattress.

2023: A New Chapter
In 2019, the Flex Group acquired Marshall Mattress from the Warner family to continue the tradition of handcrafted quality mattress construction.
Founded in 1912 by the Beteré family, Flex Group is a 3rd generation family company and leader in the luxury mattress sector. The Flex Group commands market leadership positions in Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Chile, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States and is selling its products all over the world in more than 50 countries. The company is comprised of nine manufacturing companies with a total of 12 production centers, three retail chains and 115 showrooms in seven countries, and produces more than 1 million mattresses annually.

STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®
If a textile article carries the STANDARD 100 label, you can be certain that every component of this article, i.e. every thread, button and other accessories, has been tested for harmful substances and that the article therefore is harmless for human health. The test is conducted by our independent OEKO-TEX® partner institutes on the basis of our extensive OEKO-TEX® criteria catalog. In the test they take into account numerous regulated and non-regulated substances, which may be harmful to human health. In many cases the limit values for the STANDARD 100 go beyond national and international requirements. The criteria catalog is updated at least once a year and expanded with new scientific knowledge or statutory requirements. It is not easy for manufacturers and customers to keep an overview of the legal situation concerning harmful substances every day. Our experts from the OEKO-TEX® institutes do this for you.

Our Recycling Program - No Waste!
All excess material scraps left over during the manufacturing process are compacted and recycled for reuse. This includes fabric, paper products and plastic products. To date, all Marshall Mattress bedding is produced in a focused, non-piecework environment where the staff works together as a team to offer a great night’s sleep, one pocket coil mattress set at a time.

Made without ozone depleters
Ozone’s presence is important in our upper atmosphere, where it provides a shield from the sun’s radiant energy. The Montreal Protocol, adopted in 1987, mandated that industries eliminate ozone depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by the year 2000. U.S. foam producers were well ahead of schedule in complying with this regulation. Unfortunately, in some parts of the world, CFCs are still used to manufacture foam. The CertiPUR-US label prohibits the use of any CFCs, or other ozone depleters, in the foam manufacturing process.
Made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (”Tris”) flame retardants
Some PBDEs (polybrominated diphenylethers) were used in foam to meet certain state flammability requirements, but those PBDEs were effectively banned in the U.S. by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2005. Other flame retardants that have been identified by the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) as substances that may cause cancer, may cause genetic defects or may damage fertility or unborn child (1A, 1B) may not be used in certified foam. TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) are among these FRs. A complete list of specific FRs prohibited in certified foam may be found at certipur.us/FAQ.
Made without formaldehyde
Formaldehyde has been labeled as a cause of poor indoor air quality. The absence of formaldehyde in foam is verified in CertiPUR-US-certified foam by a small chamber emission test.
Made without phthalates, regulated by the CPSC
Phthalates (pronounced “thal’-ātes”) are mainly used as a softening agent in the manufacture of some consumer products. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (2009) eliminated the use of eight specific phthalates for use in children’s toy and child care items. CertiPUR-US goes a step further by requiring detailed laboratory analysis of foam extractions and prohibiting the use of phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission in all CertiPUR-US certified foams.
Low Volatile Organic Compound emissions for indoor air quality
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a major component of air pollution. VOC emissions from household products are also a concern for indoor air quality. CertiPUR-US certified foams are tested using a small chamber test standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).* In the test, foam samples are conditioned for 72 hours after which emissions of total organic compounds are measured. Results of this test verify that CertiPUR-US compliant foams have low emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).
*ISO is one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world, and is a trusted source for technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services. Known for their high technical quality and market relevancy, ISO standards have an important role in the technical infrastructure that guides design, manufacturing and trade in the global economy.
