What’s the difference between coaching and therapy?
Coaching with me is:
Short-term
Action-oriented (meaning you’ll walk away with things you can actually DO now to get the results you want)
Hyper focused on dating and relationships (which helps you make faster progress)
Focused mainly on how to get what you want and feel how you want to feel - now and in the future
In coaching, I am not treating any diagnosable mental health conditions, like generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, or major depressive disorder.
Therapy tends to be longer-term, more insight-oriented (focused on helping you understand/make sense of things), can cover several topics all at once, and spends more time reflecting on the past than coaching does. Diagnosable mental health conditions can be treated in therapy.
Why would I choose coaching instead of therapy?
Coaching is a good choice if you want to make fast progress toward a dating or relationship related goal, whether that’s finding your person, feeling more calm and secure in a relationship, or figuring out whether or not a new relationship you’re in is the right fit for you.
Because it is short-term, action-oriented, and focused solely on dating and relationships, you’ll be able to sort through whatever problem you’re having and start practicing a new approach quickly, which will help you get where you want to be faster.
Another benefit of working with me as a coach is that I specialize in helping people with dating and relationships and have personal experience in this area. Not all therapists have training in the area of dating and/or much personal experience with it.
I see you are also a therapist. Can you be my therapist?
At this time, I am not taking new therapy clients. I’m also only able to do therapy with residents of California because of my therapy license and the different regulations around therapy. Coaching does not have the same restrictions.
Do you take insurance?
No, coaching is not covered by insurance.
How long will we work together in 1-on-1 coaching?
I work with folks for a minimum of eight weeks, with an option to extend longer than that when desired.
Can I work with you if I live outside of the US?
Yes! I hold my sessions on Zoom with people all over the world, and I am able to receive payment from anywhere in the world.
What are your credentials?
I have a Masters in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Marital and Family Therapy. Though I am not providing therapy as a coach, I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California. I have been practicing therapy since 2008 and coaching since 2020.
Have your clients gotten results?
Several of my clients have gone on to find fulfilling relationships after working with me, two have gotten married to the person they started dating while they were working with me, and a third got married to someone they started dating after working with me.
I’ve also seen several of my clients become more calm and confident in their relationships after working with me.
Clients who have come to me to sort out whether or not their relationship is a good fit for them have left feeling more clear and certain.
I can’t guarantee results, but I am confident in my ability to help people in this area.
How do I start working with you 1-on-1?
Schedule a free consultation call with me here so we can make sure I’d be a good fit to help you:
What is a coaching session like?
After our consultation call, I’ll have a good idea of what you’re hoping to get out of coaching, and I’ll use your goals to guide our sessions.
In sessions, you’ll have space to share about the things you’re wanting help with. I’ll ask questions that will help you understand yourself and the situation more deeply and fully.
I’ll share new ways of thinking about your situation and new things you can try to help you resolve the problem you’re having. You’ll practice those things between sessions and you’ll have a chance to share your experience of that goes in a future session and get support on anything that felt tricky.
Do you work with people from diverse cultural/ethnic backgrounds?
Yes, I work with people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds and aim to coach in a culturally competent way.
While my training in psychology is Eurocentric, I have a general understanding of cultural differences across ethnicities and always welcome you to share when a Eurocentric perspective on something you’re working on does not fit your cultural values. My goal is to understand you and support you in a way that fits you culturally.
Do you work with LGBTQ+ folks?
Yes, I have experience working with LGBTQ+ folks and am LGBTQ+ affirming.
Have you ever been coached?
Yes, I’ve participated in several coaching programs, and I’ve enjoyed and benefitted from each one.
